Merrilands House by Bijl Architecture – A Spotlight on LYSAGHT LONGLINE® in Action

For architect Melonie Bayl-Smith and her team at Bijl Architecture, designing Merrilands House was never about convention. From its layered planning logic to its industrial undertones, the home reflects a deep consideration of context, purpose, and material expression. And at the heart of that expression is LYSAGHT LONGLINE®, a standout profile that brings both visual and structural clarity to the build.

In the Australia ByDesign Season 7 feature, Bayl-Smith describes Merrilands as “a house cut from a different cloth”, and it’s easy to see why. The design rejects the typical front-facing façade in favour of a staggered form that opens to the garden. Internal zones are thoughtfully sequenced, and passive design strategies like deep overhangs and a dramatic central void help modulate light and temperature throughout the day.

But what ties it all together, both aesthetically and functionally, is the outer shell. LYSAGHT LONGLINE® in COLORBOND® steel Surfmist® wraps the building in a crisp, clean finish that feels distinctly modern while subtly nodding to the industrial past of Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
