Heatwaves and Thermal Resilience

Heatwaves are Australia's deadliest natural disaster, causing more fatalities than bushfires, floods and cyclones combined. Heatwaves are particularly dangerous because they can last for days with no relief, and they disproportionately affect vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, outdoor workers and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Steel roofing and walling can be part of a building material solution that makes homes cooler, cheaper to run and more sustainable.

Thermatech® Helps Keep Homes Cool on the Hottest Days

Thermatech® technology is designed to reflect more of the sun’s heat on hot sunny days, which can help keep homes cooler in the summer.* In addition, choosing pale toned roofs may also contribute to cooler local communities.

These features contribute to credits in Green Star and help improve NABERS performance ratings for buildings. Other factors to consider include:

  • To meet Section J requirements for Lysaght insulation and ventilation, you must ensure your roof space meets specific ventilation and thermal requirements, including a minimum 20mm high roof space and vapor permeable sarking above the primary insulation in climate zones 6, 7, and 8.
  • Ventilation must be achieved through evenly distributed openings to outdoor air, using products and installation methods compliant with the National Construction Code (NCC). Lysaght provides Product Advisory Bulletins (PABs) (e.g., PAB19 for high-level and PAB20 for low-level) with specific guidance for their products to help meet these ventilation requirements.

Lysaght provides products like steel roofing and specific ventilation devices and offers advisory bulletins to help with correct installation.
