Ahimsa Studio by g2 architects has claimed top honours in the Residential Design category of the 2024 Lysaght Inspirations Design Awards. Located on the picturesque Mid North Coast of New South Wales, this unique detached art studio and guest retreat exemplifies how architecture can harmoniously integrate with its natural surroundings while providing functional creative spaces.
A Design Philosophy Rooted in Harmony
The essence of the Ahimsa Studio's design is captured in its name—'Ahimsa,' meaning 'do no harm.' This philosophy guided every aspect of the project, from site selection to material choices, ensuring minimal disruption to the environment.
Positioned between a main residence and an existing shed, the studio’s placement was carefully chosen to optimise valley views while preserving the mature Eucalypts and natural landscape.
Bold Geometry Meets Sustainable Design
Clad in LYSAGHT ENSEAM® in the colour Monument®, the Ahimsa Studio stands out for its bold geometric form, presenting a striking contrast to the traditional materials of the main residence. Its sleek, angular lines and dark finish allow it to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape, while the robust exterior provides durability and bushfire resistance.
“To us, Ahimsa Studio is a celebration of diverse functionality, concise amenity, and environmental responsibility within the rural landscape on which it is nested,” said g2 architects.
Sustainability was integral to the project’s design, with passive principles applied throughout. Strategic orientation allowed for optimal natural light and ventilation, reducing energy needs. The use of bushfire-resistant Blackbutt timber reflects traditional land management practices, while LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305® on the deck roof provides extended durability with minimal environmental impact.
Bringing the Vision to Life
The success of Ahimsa Studio was a result of the collaborative efforts of dedicated professionals. “The project couldn’t have been realised without the unique performance characteristics and bold aesthetics of the Lysaght ZENITH® range,” noted g2 architects, “nor without the inspiration from our client and the expertise of consultants, builder Wayne Elks, and roofer Jarrod Few, who brought it all together.”
Drawing on more than 30 years of experience, g2 architects consistently deliver site-responsive designs that elevate quality of life and embody sustainable practices, ensuring each project is thoughtfully crafted to its environment.
A Testament to Building Better
Ahimsa Studio’s recognition at the Lysaght Inspirations Design Awards underscores its success in blending aesthetics, functionality, and respect for its surroundings. The judges praised the innovative design for complementing the rural landscape, enhancing its natural beauty without overshadowing it. With its bold form and sustainable features, the studio creates a tranquil space that fosters both creativity and a deep connection to the land.
“We are honoured to be selected as the residential winner in the 2024 Lysaght Inspiration Design Awards,” commented g2 architects. “We love finding the right products and the right design solutions to achieve good outcomes for our clients and our environment. Thanks Lysaght for a great product and a great opportunity!”
